This stunning mantel is carved from deep violet marble with flecks of white, aubergine and gold ochre veining. Long rectangles featuring raised panels rising from a sunken relief, and bordered by a narrow frame, combine with uniquely carved motifs to decorate the apron. The motifs are a combination of what appears to be a coat of arms at the center, and mixed with workman’s tools or instruments in the corner motifs. Detailed cabled flutings run down the jambs.
An early to mid-19th century Louis XVI style piece, this mantel epitomizes “Louis Seize” – a style of architecture, furniture, decoration and art just before the French Revolution. Designs in this style hearkened back to the purity and grandeur of the art of the Ancient Greeks. As such, this hand-carved piece has simple, clean lines, allowing this mantel’s luxe veining to resonate.
