This petite English Regency style mantle was carved from a green-gray marble with a unique blend of light and dark veining. Four intricately detailed and inlaid cameos of cherubs representing peace, innocence, and beauty adorn the apron. A bright pattern of alternating colors has been created by placing statuary marble between the cameos, and down the face of the jambs. These statuary pieces are highlighted with finely carved channels. The alternating pattern is further enhanced with statuary marble trim around the firebox, and as the bottom half of a tiered shelf.
This antique mantel was one of several pieces imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel of NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. This mantel is original to room 25R. The original hearth is not included. A Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
