This petite 19th century English Recency mantel is carved from gray marble with leopard-like white and pink veining. Narrow carved channels run across the face of the apron and down each leg. The center of the apron is decorated with an inlaid oval urn motif carved from white marble. The corner motifs are similar urns, inlaid, and carved from white marble, but in a round shape.
Decorative urns have served as a status symbol, particularly in the 1700s. Decorators of that era wanted to bring the natural outdoors into the home and began using urns indoors as planters to bring sophisticated greenery to a room. Craftsmen seeking to echo status and beauty incorporated urns into their designs to demonstrate luxury and wealth. This antique mantel was one of several mantels imported from Europe to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria of NYC, which opened on October 1, 1931. Acquired from Waldorf Astoria NYC. This mantel is original to 22k and a Waldorf Astoria authenticity card is included with your purchase.
Pictured still installed at the Waldorf Astoria, kindly request the reclaimed condition before purchasing. Located at our Scranton Warehouse, please allow 3-4 weeks for processing.
