A reclaimed antique mantel, fashioned from light green and tan marble, accentuated by veined statuary marble trim and a coordinating shelf. Dominating the apron’s center is a generously sized carved statuary marble panel depicting two playful children positioned over a jug. Enhancing its corners are exquisitely carved marble motifs portraying mythical fluted Pan figures.
This exceptional mantel was carefully removed from its location in the 6th-floor hallway of the Waldorf Astoria, showcasing a remarkably well-preserved state ranging from very good to excellent condition. Bearing the graceful marks of time, its wear is consistent with its age. It was originally imported to furnish the historic Waldorf Astoria in New York City, which officially opened its doors on October 1, 1931.
The mantel’s authentic antique character is further underscored by the worn Crema Marfil marble hearthstone. Prior to its removal from the hotel, minor repairs were undertaken on the narrow side panels to ensure its continued integrity.
