The panels crafted from a delicately hued burgundy marble, adorned with graceful gray and white veining, are beautifully complemented by the veined statuary marble shelf and trim components. Serving as the centerpiece, a generously sized carved statuary marble plaque depicts a child riding a lion, while intricately carved urns grace each corner with their motifs.
During its installation at the Waldorf Astoria, this mantel was accompanied by two brick columns positioned at the rear of the fireplace. The shelf extended along the sides and rear, extending beyond the marble surround. The unique dimensions are evident in this specific detail. This mantel, sourced from Suite F on the 9th floor of the historic Waldorf Astoria in New York City, was removed in remarkably good to excellent condition.
Originally imported from Europe, it was selected to furnish the hotel that commenced operations on October 1, 1931. Displaying wear indicative of its age, the mantel’s antique allure is further enhanced by the weathered surface of the Crema Marfil marble hearthstone.
